Exploring Faith, Belief and Big Questions

At Wootton St Andrew’s CE (VA) Primary School, Religious Education and Worldviews is at the heart of our curriculum and reflects our Christian vision of Journeying Together in the Light of Love, Joy, Courage and Trust.

As a Voluntary Aided Church of England school, Religious Education and Worldviews has a distinctive place within the curriculum and is taught in accordance with the expectations of the Church of England.

The subject enables children to develop religious literacy by exploring beliefs, practices and worldviews, encouraging them to ask thoughtful questions, reflect on their own beliefs and develop respect for the views of others.

The Teaching of RE and Worldviews Through a Structured Process

As a Church of England Voluntary Aided school, at least 50% of our Religious Education and Worldviews curriculum is devoted to the teaching of Christianity, with the remaining curriculum exploring a range of other religions and non-religious worldviews.

We follow the NATRE Primary RE Curriculum, with EYFS following the dedicated Early Years programme and Years 1 to 6 following a carefully planned two-year rolling programme to meet the needs of our mixed-age classes.

Our curriculum ensures full coverage of the Church of England Statement of Entitlement whilst enabling pupils to develop a secure understanding of Christianity alongside other major religions and worldviews.

Progression of Knowledge and Skills through the Year Groups

Our Religious Education and Worldviews curriculum is carefully sequenced so that children build their knowledge and understanding over time. Pupils progressively develop the ability to enquire, investigate, interpret, reflect and respond to religious and non-religious worldviews.

Key vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited, enabling children to discuss beliefs, teachings, sources of authority, festivals, places of worship and religious practices with increasing confidence and accuracy.

As children move through the school, they deepen their understanding of Christianity while making thoughtful comparisons with other religions and worldviews. They learn to consider different perspectives, ask increasingly challenging questions and express their own ideas respectfully, supported by evidence and informed understanding.

Through this progression, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to become respectful, reflective and informed members of modern British society.

Enrichment and Experiences

We believe that Religious Education and Worldviews is brought to life through meaningful experiences that help children explore faith, belief and identity in the real world.

Children have opportunities to:

Visit St Andrew’s Church regularly for services, worship and celebrations throughout the Christian year.
Learn from clergy and members of the local church community through visits and shared activities.
Visit a range of places of worship, including churches, mosques, synagogues, temples and gurdwaras where possible.
Meet people from different faiths and those with non-religious worldviews, gaining first-hand insight into beliefs, traditions and lived experiences.
Take part in our annual World Week, exploring diverse cultures, religions and communities from around the globe.
Participate in Spirited Arts Week, using art, music, drama and creativity to explore faith, spirituality and life’s big questions.
Engage in charitable projects and community partnerships that encourage service, compassion and responsibility.
Experience opportunities for prayer, reflection and spiritual development through Collective Worship and wider school life.

These experiences help children develop curiosity, respect and understanding, while encouraging them to reflect on their own beliefs and values. Through Religious Education and Worldviews, pupils learn not only about faith and belief, but also how these shape individuals, communities and the wider world.

Right to Withdraw

Parents and carers have the legal right to request that their child is wholly or partly withdrawn from Religious Education and Worldviews. They are not required to give a reason for this request, although in line with the guidance of the Diocese of Lincoln, we ask that requests are made in writing to the Headteacher.

We welcome the opportunity to discuss the aims and content of our Religious Education and Worldviews curriculum with parents so that they have all the information they need to make an informed decision. These discussions are offered to support parents and are not intended to influence or delay their decision.

Should a pupil be withdrawn, the school will provide appropriate supervision in accordance with statutory guidance.
