Collective Worship
At Wootton St Andrew’s CE (VA) Primary School, Collective Worship is at the heart of our school day. As a Church of England Voluntary Aided school, worship is a central expression of our Christian vision and provides opportunities for our whole school community to come together to reflect, celebrate, learn and grow. Rooted in The Wootton Way – Journeying Together in the Light of Love, Joy, Courage and Trust, our worship encourages every child to flourish spiritually, morally, socially and culturally.
Our Collective Worship reflects the guidance of the Church of England and the Lincoln Diocesan Board of Education, ensuring that it is:
- Inclusive – everyone is welcomed, respected and able to participate, whatever their faith, belief or background.
- Invitational – children are invited, but never compelled, to engage in prayer, reflection and acts of worship.
- Inspiring – worship encourages children to think deeply, ask questions, develop spiritually and consider how faith can influence daily life.
As a Church of England school, our worship is distinctly Christian whilst remaining accessible to all. We explore the teachings of Jesus and the Bible, celebrate the Christian calendar and encourage children to reflect on how Christian values can help us to make positive choices in today’s world.
Our Worship Calendar
Our three-year Collective Worship programme is carefully planned around both the Church’s liturgical year and our Christian vision, ensuring that worship is relevant to the seasons of the Church whilst reflecting the journey our children make throughout the academic year.
Each half term has its own overarching theme, allowing children to explore key aspects of faith, character and personal development in greater depth:
Our Worship Cycle
We follow a carefully planned three-year Collective Worship cycle based around the Church’s liturgical year, ensuring children experience the breadth of the Christian story throughout their time at Wootton.
Each week follows a consistent structure that helps children revisit and deepen their understanding of the weekly theme.
Worship Club
Our Worship Club provides children with a genuine voice in shaping Collective Worship at Wootton.
Meeting weekly, members work alongside staff to plan, prepare and lead worship, helping to ensure it remains engaging, meaningful and relevant for our school community.
Children take on a variety of leadership roles, including:
- planning and leading prayers
- preparing Bible dramas and presentations
- selecting hymns and worship music
- creating reflective activities
- helping to set up the worship space
- evaluating Collective Worship and gathering the views of other pupils to help shape future worship.
Church, Community and Special Worship
As a Church school, our worship extends beyond the classroom. Throughout the year we celebrate key Christian festivals and significant moments in the Church calendar through special acts of worship, many of which take place at St Andrew’s Church. These include Harvest, Remembrance, Christingle, Christmas, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost, Leavers’ Service and St Andrew’s Day, often held as services in Wootton St Andrew’s Church.
We also welcome clergy, church volunteers and visitors into school to lead worship, helping children develop a deeper understanding of faith whilst strengthening the close partnership between school, church and the wider community. These experiences enable our children to recognise that worship is both a shared celebration and an opportunity for personal reflection as they continue their own journey together in the light of Love, Joy, Courage and Trust.
