Inspiring a Love of Music
At Wootton St Andrew’s CE (VA) Primary School, we believe music inspires creativity, confidence and a lifelong appreciation of the arts.
Through singing, performing, composing and listening, children explore music from a wide range of genres, cultures and historical periods.
Music enables our children to live out our vision by showing love through performing together, joy through making music, courage through sharing their talents with others and trust through listening, collaborating and supporting one another.
The Teaching of Music Through a Structured Process
From EYFS to Year 6, children follow carefully selected Kapow Primary Music units, supplemented by a progressive programme of learning to play the recorder.
EYFS uses the dedicated Kapow Early Years curriculum, while our mixed-age Key Stage 1 and 2 classes follow a carefully planned two-year rolling programme, ensuring full National Curriculum coverage without unnecessary repetition.
Through singing, listening, composing, performing and recorder lessons, every child develops practical musicianship, learns to read simple notation and gains the confidence to perform both individually and as part of an ensemble.
Progression of Knowledge through the Year Groups
Our music curriculum is carefully sequenced so that children continually revisit and deepen their learning through a cyclical curriculum.
Pupils progressively develop their understanding of pulse, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture and structure whilst becoming increasingly confident performers, composers and listeners.
Ongoing formative assessment through practical music-making, performance and discussion ensures children build securely on prior learning and continue to develop their musical knowledge and skills.
Enrichment and Experiences
We believe music should be experienced, celebrated and shared beyond the classroom.
Children have opportunities to:
- Work with professional musicians, including Professor Chris Wilson and internationally renowned saxophonist Snake Davis.
- Perform regularly in collective worship, at St Andrew’s Church, school productions and community events.
- Take part in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Big Sing festivals.
- Join music groups and ensembles, developing confidence, teamwork and performance skills.
- Experience music from around the world during our annual World Week, including African drumming, traditional instruments and music from different cultures.
- Develop an appreciation of diverse musical traditions, cultures and communities.
- Combine music with art, drama and worship during Spirited Arts Week to explore creativity, spirituality and faith.
- Celebrate and share their musical achievements with audiences throughout the year.
These rich experiences help children develop confidence, creativity, teamwork and a lifelong love of music.
