Year 1/2 Curriculum Overview - Cycle B

At Wootton St Andrew’s CE (VA) Primary School, our Year 1 and Year 2 children learn together as a Key Stage 1 class, following a carefully planned two-year rolling curriculum. This ensures that every child experiences the full National Curriculum whilst allowing teachers to build learning progressively across the two year groups.

Our themes combine both History and Geography, enabling children to develop a secure understanding of the world around them, from their own local community to places and events further afield. Throughout the year, children build their knowledge of locational geography, learning about the United Kingdom and the wider world, whilst also developing an understanding of chronology through the study of significant events and people from history within and beyond living memory. Enquiry, questioning and first-hand experiences are central to our curriculum, encouraging children to become curious historians and geographers who can compare the past with the present and understand how people and places have changed over time.

Alongside our classroom learning, we enrich our curriculum through visits, visitors and local links wherever possible, helping children make meaningful connections between their learning and life in our rural village community.

Our Themes for 2026–2027 (Cycle B)

Autumn – Across the Deep Blue Sea: From Pirates to Polar Explorers

Our learning begins with a journey across the world’s oceans. Children discover the fascinating lives of famous pirates and explore how people have travelled and navigated across the seas throughout history. They then venture to the Arctic and Antarctic, learning about polar exploration, the world’s coldest environments and how people and animals adapt to survive in these extreme climates.

Throughout the term, children develop their geographical understanding by locating continents, oceans and polar regions on maps and globes, while also comparing these distant places with life in Wootton.

Spring – London Through Time

In the spring term, children investigate one of the world’s most famous cities. They begin by exploring modern-day London, identifying its landmarks, transport networks and human features before comparing city life with our own rural village community.

The second half of the term focuses on The Great Fire of London, one of the most significant events in British history. Children learn about what happened in 1666, why the fire spread so quickly and how London changed as a result. They also begin to understand how historians use different sources of evidence to find out about the past and consider whether the Great Fire really was “great”.

Summer – From Field to Fork

Our final theme celebrates the countryside and the importance of food and farming, with particular relevance to Wootton, where many families have strong links to agriculture and the surrounding rural landscape.

Children learn about life on a farm, where food comes from and the journey it takes from field to plate. They explore how crops and animals are cared for and why farming is such an important part of our local community.

The theme also introduces healthy living, helping children understand a balanced diet, healthy food choices and the importance of exercise. Through this topic, children develop an appreciation of the local environment while gaining knowledge and life skills that support healthy, active lifestyles.
