At Wootton St Andrew’s CE (VA) Primary School, we believe Art and Design enables children to express themselves creatively, develop technical skills and explore the world with imagination and curiosity. Our curriculum encourages pupils to become confident artists who experiment, take creative risks and appreciate the work of artists, designers and craftspeople from a wide range of cultures and traditions. Art and Design enables our children to live out our vision by showing love through valuing creativity and the work of others, joy through self-expression, courage through experimenting and taking creative risks, and trust through reflecting on, sharing and celebrating their own and others’ achievements.

The Teaching of Art & Design Through a Structured Process
Our curriculum combines carefully selected units from the Kapow Primary Art and Design scheme with our own bespoke curriculum, ensuring full coverage of the National Curriculum whilst reflecting the distinctive character of our school.
Children in EYFS follow the dedicated Kapow Early Years curriculum, exploring colour, pattern, texture, shape and form through purposeful play and creative experiences. Years 1 to 6 follow a carefully planned two-year rolling programme designed for our mixed-age classes.
Each year, all children take part in Spirited Arts Week, where artistic knowledge and skills are taught through ambitious whole-school projects inspired by faith, spirituality and the wider world. Cycle A focuses on painting and mixed media, whilst Cycle B develops sculpture and three-dimensional art.
Progression of Knowledge through the Year Groups
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure children continually revisit and build upon their previous learning. Knowledge and skills are taught progressively through a cyclical curriculum, allowing pupils to deepen their understanding as techniques become increasingly sophisticated.
Children develop confidence across drawing, painting, sculpture, printing, textiles, collage and mixed media while studying the work of significant artists, architects, designers and craftspeople from a wide range of cultures and historical periods.
As they move through the school, pupils become increasingly independent in planning, creating, evaluating and refining their artwork, using sketchbooks to record ideas and demonstrate their creative journey. Ongoing formative assessment ensures each child builds securely on prior learning and develops as a confident, reflective artist.
Enrichment and Experiences
Art is celebrated throughout school life at Wootton.
Children have opportunities to:
- Enter the Annual Spirited Arts Week competition
- Combine art, music, drama and collective worship to express ideas creatively.
- Experience a whole-school World Week each year, exploring the art, crafts, textiles, architecture and cultural traditions of countries around the world.
- Opportunities to experiment with a wide variety of media, techniques and large-scale collaborative artwork beyond the taught curriculum.
- Regular opportunities to exhibit artwork through community events and local exhibitions, including the Wootton Village Open Gardens.
These experiences help children develop confidence, creativity and cultural understanding.
