Physical Education

Inspiring Active, Healthy and Confident Learners

At Wootton St Andrew’s CE (VA) Primary School, we believe Physical Education plays a vital role in promoting healthy, active lifestyles whilst developing confidence, resilience, teamwork and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity.

We provide a broad, balanced and inclusive PE curriculum that enables every child to develop fundamental movement skills, improve physical competence and experience success across a wide range of sports and activities.

Physical Education enables our children to live out our vision by showing love through respect and encouragement for others, joy through participation and achievement, courage through challenging themselves and embracing new experiences, and trust through teamwork, fairness and good sportsmanship.

The Teaching of PE Through a Structured Process

In Early Years, physical development is taught through the EYFS Framework and Development Matters, with children developing gross and fine motor skills through indoor and outdoor provision, games, dance, climbing, balancing, throwing, catching and coordinated movement.

From Year 1 to Year 6, children receive two hours of high-quality PE each week through the Primary Steps in PE curriculum, delivered as part of our carefully planned two-year rolling programme for mixed-age classes.

Key Stage 2 pupils benefit from a weekly specialist PE lesson delivered by the Get Ahead Partnership from Baysgarth School, providing access to expert coaching and a wider range of sporting experiences.

Progression of Knowledge and Skills through the Year Groups

Our PE curriculum is carefully sequenced so that children continually revisit and develop their learning through a cyclical curriculum.

Pupils progressively build confidence across fundamental movement skills, games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and outdoor and adventurous activities, applying their skills with increasing accuracy and independence.

Ongoing formative assessment through observation, discussion and performance ensures children build securely on prior learning while developing teamwork, resilience, leadership and good sportsmanship.
