At Wootton St Andrew’s CE (VA) Primary School, Geography inspires children to become curious about the world and their place within it.
Through the study of people, places and environments, children develop an understanding of the physical and human processes that shape our planet whilst becoming responsible global citizens.
Geography enables our children to live out our vision by showing love through caring for God’s world and its people, joy through exploring diverse places and cultures, courage through asking questions about global issues, and trust by respecting different communities and environments.

The Teaching of Geography Through a Structured Process
Geography is one of the main drivers of our curriculum, providing exciting themes that immerse children in the wider world.
Our carefully planned two-year rolling programme enables pupils to progressively develop geographical knowledge and skills whilst making meaningful links across the curriculum.
Learning is carefully mapped so that children build on prior knowledge year after year.
For example, children begin by exploring sea creatures, oceans and coastal environments through play and stories in EYFS, develop their understanding of the British coastline and seaside in Key Stage 1, and later investigate marine conservation, sustainability and protecting our oceans in Key Stage 2.
Rich classroom environments, fieldwork, high-quality texts and practical enquiries ensure learning is purposeful, memorable and rooted in both our local area and the wider world.
Progression of Knowledge and Skills through the Year Groups
Our Geography curriculum is carefully sequenced so that children continually revisit and deepen their learning through a cyclical curriculum.
Pupils progressively develop their understanding of place, location, human and physical geography, fieldwork and mapping, becoming increasingly confident geographical enquirers who can make connections between their local area, the United Kingdom and the wider world.
Ongoing formative assessment through discussion, fieldwork, practical investigations and written outcomes ensures children build securely on prior learning.
Enrichment and Experiences
We believe Geography is best learned through first-hand experiences that help children develop a deeper understanding of the world around them and their place within it.
Children have opportunities to:
- Take part in educational visits linked to local, regional and national geographical studies.
- Carry out fieldwork within the school grounds and local community, developing practical geographical skills.
- Participate in our annual World Week, exploring countries, cultures, food, music and traditions from around the globe.
- Learn from visitors who share their experiences of living, working or travelling in different parts of the world.
- Complete themed homework projects that encourage independent geographical research and enquiry.
- Explore issues linked to environmental sustainability, conservation and global citizenship throughout the year.
These experiences help children develop curiosity, cultural understanding and an appreciation of the diversity of our world. Through fieldwork, enquiry and global learning, pupils are encouraged to think critically about environmental issues, understand different communities and recognise their role as responsible citizens in an interconnected world.
