At Wootton St Andrew’s CE (VA) Primary School, History is at the heart of our curriculum, inspiring children to become curious, reflective and informed citizens.
Through the study of Britain’s past and the wider world, children develop an understanding of chronology, change, cause and consequence whilst appreciating how history has shaped their lives today.
History enables our children to live out our vision by showing love through valuing the lives and experiences of others, joy through discovering the past, courage through questioning evidence and challenging misconceptions, and trust by interpreting sources thoughtfully and respectfully.

The Teaching of History Through a Structured Process
History is one of the main drivers of our curriculum, providing rich, immersive themes that inspire learning across many subjects.
Our carefully planned two-year rolling programme enables children in our mixed-age classes to build historical knowledge progressively whilst avoiding unnecessary repetition. Rather than following published schemes in isolation, we carefully tailor learning to reflect our local area and community. For example, when studying the Romans, children explore the Roman roads of Lincolnshire and consider the legacy they left within our local landscape.
Classrooms are transformed into engaging learning environments, bringing each historical period to life through artefacts, role play, high-quality texts and practical experiences.
Progression of Knowledge and Skills through the Year Groups
Our History curriculum is carefully sequenced so that children continually revisit and deepen their learning through a cyclical curriculum.
Pupils progressively develop their understanding of chronology, historical enquiry, significance, interpretation and the use of evidence whilst making meaningful connections between local, national and world history.
Ongoing formative assessment through discussion, enquiry, written work and practical activities ensures children build securely on prior learning.

We believe history is best brought to life through memorable experiences that immerse children in the past and inspire curiosity about the world that came before them.
Children have opportunities to:
- Visit museums, historic sites and places of local interest to deepen their understanding of historical events and periods.
- Learn from historians, visitors and specialist workshops that bring history to life through engaging first-hand experiences.
- Explore local history through studies connected to Wootton, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
- Complete themed homework projects that encourage independent research and historical enquiry.
- Handle artefacts, replica objects and historical sources to investigate life in the past.
- Take part in celebration days and immersive classroom experiences that recreate different historical periods.
- Discover the lives and achievements of significant local figures, including John Harrison, exploring his influence and lasting legacy.
These experiences help children develop a deeper understanding of chronology, society and historical change while fostering a lifelong interest in the past.
By making history relevant, interactive and meaningful, pupils learn to think critically, ask questions and appreciate how the past shapes the world we live in today.
