The Wootton Way

At Wootton St Andrew’s CE (VA) Primary School, excellent behaviour is built upon strong relationships, clear expectations and our Christian vision of Journeying Together in the Light of Love, Joy, Courage and Trust.

Our values are much more than words on a wall—they are lived every day. Children understand that making good choices helps everyone to learn, feel safe and enjoy school. Whether they are in the classroom, playground, hall or representing the school in the community, our pupils are encouraged to demonstrate The Wootton Way in everything they do.

Children show:

Love by being kind, caring for others and looking after their school.
Joy by embracing learning, playing together and celebrating one another’s successes.
Courage by persevering when learning is difficult, being honest when mistakes are made and having the confidence to say sorry.
Trust by making responsible choices, doing the right thing even when nobody is watching and becoming independent learners.

We are incredibly proud of the behaviour demonstrated by our children, who consistently receive positive comments from visitors, educational professionals and members of our wider community.

Celebrating Positive Behaviour

We believe that recognising positive behaviour is far more powerful than simply responding when things go wrong.

Children are rewarded regularly for demonstrating The Wootton Way through:

recognition during collective worship
positive messages home
certificates and awards
recognising effort, perseverance and kindness as well as achievement.

Children collect Wootton Way Points throughout each half term by consistently demonstrating our school values. These points can then be exchanged in our popular Wootton Way Shop, where children choose rewards they have worked hard to earn.

Behaviour For Learning

Excellent behaviour creates excellent learning.

Across school, classrooms are calm, purposeful and welcoming environments where children understand that everyone has the right to learn.

Our teachers have consistently high expectations and support children to become increasingly independent, resilient and reflective learners. Through clear routines and positive relationships, children quickly learn what successful learning looks like and take pride in doing their very best.

When children make mistakes, we see them as opportunities to learn, reflect and make better choices next time.

When Things Go Wrong

All children make mistakes from time to time. When this happens, we respond calmly, consistently and fairly, helping children reflect on their choices while maintaining positive relationships.

Our simple stepped approach is:

Verbal Reminder
A gentle reminder of expected behaviour and our values of Love, Joy, Courage and Trust.

Warning
A clear warning gives children the opportunity to pause, reflect and reset.

Move
If behaviour continues, children may move within the classroom to help them refocus. This is recorded in their Journey Journal.

Yellow Card
For continued or more serious behaviour, children may work in another classroom or, during break/lunchtime, spend time reflecting with a member of staff. A restorative conversation takes place before returning to learning or play. Parents are informed and the incident recorded.

Red Card
A Red Card is issued following a second Yellow Card in the same day, or for behaviour that is sufficiently serious to require an immediate higher-level response, such as unsafe, deliberately harmful or significantly disruptive behaviour.

The Headteacher will become involved, parents will be contacted, and the incident recorded. An appropriate consequence and restorative conversation will follow, with support put in place where needed to help the child succeed.

SEND

Reasonable adjustments are made where appropriate to ensure children with additional needs are supported fairly and consistently.

Helping Children Learn From Their Choices

At Wootton, our aim is not simply to issue consequences, but to help children develop the skills they need to make positive choices in the future. Whenever behaviour falls below our expectations, we take time to talk with children about what happened, who has been affected and how relationships can be repaired.

Children are encouraged to reflect on their actions and, where appropriate, contribute ideas about how they can put things right or what would be a fair and meaningful way to repair the situation. By involving children in this restorative process, they develop responsibility, empathy and a deeper understanding of the impact their actions have on others. Our goal is always to help every child learn, grow and continue their journey with Love, Joy, Courage and Trust.

Restorative Conversation

Our aim is always to repair relationships rather than simply issue consequences.

Following any significant behaviour incident, staff hold a restorative conversation with the child.

Together they explore:

What happened?
Who has been affected?
How can things be put right?
What can we do differently next time?

Every lesson is viewed as a fresh start, allowing children to move forward positively and continue their learning.

Behaviour Support

Whilst the vast majority of our children consistently demonstrate excellent behaviour, we recognise that some pupils may require additional support at different times.

Where appropriate, we work closely with parents and external professionals to identify barriers to successful behaviour and develop personalised support plans. These plans focus on teaching and reinforcing positive behaviours, helping every child experience success whilst ensuring all pupils can learn in a calm, safe and nurturing environment.
